This is a page about Shell Keeps

The shell keep was the simplest of the two stone keep castles being made by replacing the wooden wall around the Motte with a high stone ring wall.

Most shell keeps are circular in shape. Living and service quarters were built against on the inner side of the wall around a small courtyard. These buildings were made of timber but were then later rebuilt in stone.

Shell keeps were very hard to siege because they had no corners and if you want attack a castle with a catapult or trebuchet (a wooden machine that could throw rocks at the enemy) you would start at the corners.
